Grand Canyon TrailsThis map was produced by cartographer Kent Schulte.  This is  my favorite topographic map of  Grand Canyon National Park.   This is  truly a hiker friendly map and will prove to be a useful tool for both the day-hiker and the backpacker.

This map was revised in 2007, and it has  many improvements over  the 1rst edition (which was already my favorite map of the Grand Canyon).  The improved shaded relief makes this map really "pop", providing a beautiful, detailed and stunning view of the Grand Canyon.  Mileage information has been added to all trail junctions, plus cumulative mileages are listed for select trails. This new edition includes trail profile graphs for the more popular trails; as well as ratings, descriptions and statistics for these trails and others.

This map covers the huge core of Grand Canyon National Park. This is the area where 99% of visitors travel and where 90% of backcountry trips take place, and where most trails and reliable water sources are. Also included:  information on car camping, visitor services, Backcountry Use Areas, Permit, obtaining a Backcountry Use Permit, perennial water sources in the Canyon....and more.

It's made of durable, tear-resistant, waterproof material (my personal copy has seen me through many miles of canyon hiking, and is barely worn). I recommend this map for anyone planning a visit to the Grand Canyon...I believe it is indispensable for any hike below the rim.

Trails Illustrated Map Grand Canyon by National Geographic.    Top

Trails Illustrated Topographic Maps are widely respected by over a million users and federal, state and local land management agencies as reliable, easy to use, and complete trail maps.  Many people prefer Trails Illustrated maps over all others.

This map is filled with valuable trip planning information.  It includes detailed information on Leave No Trace, Safety (emergencies & hiking smart); obtaining Backountry Use Permits, Backcountry Use Areas, and Backcountry Regulations. Suggestions are provided for day hikes and backpacking trips. There is also contact information for area hotels, car camping and the Havasupai Tribe - essential if you plan on visiting Havasu Falls. This map, too  is made of durable, tear-resistant waterproof material. Revised in 2003.
Approximate scale  1:63,360.  24" x 36"  It is only $9.95

Summary: Both of  the above topographic maps are superb. Both are packed with valuable information. The Grand Canyon Trails map is more attractive and easier to read (its contour lines are more distinguishable). Both cover the vast majority of Grand Canyon National Park. However, the Trails Illustrated Map does cover more - while the Grand Canyon Trails map ends just west of Dripping Springs, the Trails Illustrated Map continues to Great Thumb Mesa - an additional 18 miles. This area is seldom visited.

Map & Guide to Grand Canyon - South Rim                                                      Back to Top
Fine map by Rufus Graphics

This Grand Canyon map (not topographic - day hikers only) provides a fine overview of the canyon from Santa Maria Spring (in the west) to Grandview Point (in the east) - the area visited by the overwhelming majority of Grand Canyon visitors.  It includes a map of the roads in and around Grand Canyon Village, the location of stores, hotels, campgrounds, laundry and showers, parking lot locations and shuttle routes.

The Map & Guide offers suggestions  for those with limited time (2-3 hours, 1/2 day and 1 full day) on what to see and do, and also provides a number of options for those that have more time to spend. It also identifies many Grand Canyon features, gives a short lesson in Grand Canyon geology, flora and fauna, and provides natural history information. It also points out some of the best locations to view the sunrise and sunset, places to visit nearby, contact information for lodging, camping and restaurants, and more.  Hard to beat at this price. Practical for your visit, and a fine souvenir.
Updated and revised in 2007. Only $2.95
