Yosemite National Park Books - Hiking & Trail

Best Easy Day Hikes
Yosemite National Park

A Falcon Guide

This trail guide book is a little gem.  It features 24 trails scattered in 5 park locations: Yosemite Valley, Wawona Road Trails, Glacier Point Road Trails, Tioga Road Trails and Tuolumne Meadows Trails.  Trail descriptions are concise and  interesting. They provide the reader with some history and relevant information that enrich the hiking experience.

This book does a nice job in selecting the best trails for its intended audience. It is a good choice for those who don't have the time to spend hours on the trail (many are around a half mile,  others 2 or 3, and one is 5 miles in length).

Best Easy Day Hikes - Yosemite National Park brings you to some beautiful scenery.  However, it is limited, again due to its target audience.  If you have the time and energy to spend half or full days on the trail then I recommend that you consider the excellent book below Yosemite Top Trails.  Or buy the DVD Trail Guide.  It covers the best trails in Yosemite,  ranging from easy to very strenuous.

Best Easy Day Hikes is 4 1/4" x 7" and has 80 pages, so it fits easily in a daypack or even in a pocket.

Who this book is for.  This book is for day hikers that either can't or don't want to spend more than a few hours on the trail at a time, but who want to get the most out of their hiking time.

One Best Hike: Yosemite's Half Dome

Wilderness Press

By Rick Deutsch

Of all the hiking adventures in Yosemite National Park, probably the single most compelling to visitors from all over the world is the hike to the summit of Half Dome, the 8,842-foot granite rock that stands as the Park's signature landmark. For many, it's a much anticipated once-in-a-lifetime achievement. The most popular route to Half Dome's summit is a grueling 16-mile round-trip day trek with 10,800 feet in elevation gain and loss. Although the hike is non-technical, with hikers climbing fixed cables up the granite side of the rock, many would-be hikers are hesitant about this potentially risky trip. How fit should you be? What preparations do you need beforehand? What should you bring? How should you pace yourself during the day? An estimated 50,000 people attempt the Half-Dome hike each year with up to 800 per day during peak season.

Rick Deutsch, "Mr. Half Dome," has done this great hike 24 times at press time and has written the only guide to this extremely strenuous hike. He lives the "Carpe Diem" – or "Seize the day" life, making every day count. His casual style makes this book a comfortable read while preparing the reader with the tools to reach the summit – safely. Rick teaches hiking at San Francisco area colleges and also lectures at outfitters, museums, libraries and cruise ships.

Who this book is for. Anyone with a goal of hiking to the top of the summit of Half Dome in California's Yosemite National Park. From pre-trip advice to on-the-trail tips, this guide is aimed at both casual and experienced hikers.

Top Trails Yosemite
 Must Do Hikes for Everyone

By Jeffrey P. Schaffer

This excellent guidebook hand-selects Yosemite's best 45 trails, ranging from the very easy (1/2 mile round-trip to Bridalveil Fall) to the very strenuous (Half Dome). The first 16 pages cover Yosemite flora, fauna, geography and geology; camping & permits information, trail selection, etc. Then come the trails. Trail descriptions are organized by park location: Northeast Yosemite, Tuolumne Meadows, Central Yosemite, Northwest Yosemite, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite Valley's South Rim and South Yosemite.

Even if you are planning on hiking only in/from the Valley this book can be an excellent choice. Yosemite's best trails are not discussed in Best Easy Day Hikes because Yosemite's best hikes are not easy. Half Dome, Clouds Rest, the Panorama & 4 Mile Trails are incredible hikes that should not be missed by those in condition to do them, and they are covered in ths book, but not in Easy Day Hikes. (Our DVD Hiking Guide to Yosemite also covers these trails, as well as all of the Yosemite Valley trails in this book, and more.)

Mr. Schaffer has an inquisitive mind and a deep love for Yosemite. This has led him to an intimate knowledge of not just Yosemite's many trails, but also of the many environmental forces behind the forming of Yosemite and ties it together. A great read.

Who this book is for. Day hikers or backpackers in good physical condition willing to exert themselves to see some of the world's greatest scenery.(Interested in seeing these trails? Please consider our DVD Hiking Guide.)
